The Amazing Sidr tree and its wonderful honey
First we have to mention the Sidr tree to fully appreciate the world famous Sidr honey. This tree also called Jujube tree is a sturdy deep rooted tree which has withstood the devastating floods of Eram at Ma’arib Yemen with two other trees: the Tamarisk (more about this tree and its honey later) and the Mustard Tree. (There is a reference to it in the Quran Sura Saba: 15-16)
The Sidr tree has medicinal values used since centuries. Each part of the tree has a purpose in healing. In addition to its many medicinal uses, Sidr berries are also extremely nutritious.
It was reported that:
Abu Nu’aym in his Prophetic medicine mentioned that according to the hadith:
“When Adam was sent down to earth, the first of its fruits he ate was Nabq (another arabic word for Sidr fruits).”
Fruits of sidr trees were found to have a very high-energy value. Only dates, figs, raisins, and few other dried fruits have a higher value. The seeds are rich in protein, and the leaves in Calcium, Iron, and Magnesium.
The Honey
Allah mentions honey in the holy Qur’an
And thy Lord taught the Bee to build its cells in hills, on trees, and in (men’s) habitations; Then to eat of all the produce (of the earth), and find with skill the spacious paths of its Lord: there issues from within their bodies a drink of varying colours, wherein is healing for men: verily in this is a Sign for those who give thought [Al-Quran 16:68–69]
As well in various hadeeth
Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
(The Prophet (ﷺ) said), “Healing is in three things: A gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire (cauterizing).” But I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with fire.” (Sahih Bukhari)
“You should take the two that bring healing: Honey and the Qur’an.” (Al Haakim)
Sidr Honey
It is interesting to note that bees fed on the Sidr flowers alone, sometimes die after making about 3 trips to the flower. (Typically, it is estimated that all bees of a certain hive must make 37,000 trips to make half a kilo of honey!) This is because the nectar is truly potent and the weaker bees cannot survive only on this diet.
